This past holiday I received a few pairs of sticky yoga socks from 2 different companies.
First was a pair of toesox. These are made of 90% organic cotton and 10% spandex. Available in 6 sizes (XXS-XL) and a variety of colors, the website boasts a “patented non-slip sole, five toe design to spread your toes, hygienic alternative to bare feet, great travel companion.” I found these to be thick and comfortable in the toe area. They have a sturdy ankle elastic and a “well-built” feeling. The stickies on the bottom were pretty solid and strong. The socks were warm, and fit right in my yoga bag. In standing postures, I felt a little detached from my mat but I can see how they would help a practitioner who was working right on a floor surface, sans mat. In poses such as downward dog, lunges, and warriors, I didn’t feel safe grounding through any foot that was pressing. As I did press my feet, the stickies would stick to the mat fine, but the socks would “give” against my foot, either slipping away from my toes or grinding into the spaces between my toes.
The other pair of yoga socks I received were the Toezies. Available in a few colors and 2 “general” sizes, these socks have an open toe design. The website advertises, “80% breathable cotton and ankle-length Toezies provide non-skid stability and hygienic protection on studio flooring and mats – or lets you forego a sticky mat altogether if you like.“ The striped design is cute, but compared to the toesox, I found the Toezies very flimsy, thin, and not well sized to the foot. They are not warm at all, and stickies weren’t near as sturdy as the toesox. Since they are so thin, grounding in standing postures felt more “true” to the mat, but downdog/warrior type poses were impossible.
Both socks are easily wearable in flipflops. But what I REALLY like about them is that they are great for instructors who are walking around a class. I can protect my own feet against the studio floor, (which gets dirty/sandy especially in winter!) stay warm, and break into a pose on the floor whenever I need to.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend the toesox over the Toezies, especially since they are both around $13 a pair. In my opinion, the toesox are a much stronger product.
Disclaimer- This product was tested with yoga, not Pilates. The socks are advertised for both, and may be reviewed differently for Pilates.
