Some of my goals include:
- Purchase 75-90% of raw beef products from local and grass-fed sources. (Rising Moon Farm, Thousand Hills Cattle Co.)
- Purchase and consume 75-90% of seafood and sushi from sustainable and healthful sources. (Seafood Watch)
- Purchase and consume local dairy as it is available including eggs, milk, and cottage cheese. (Kalona Organics)
- Explore options on purchasing humanely and locally raised pork, chicken, and beef in large quantities (Who wants to share a pig?)
- Buy more in-season produce and try not to be so self-seeking about fruits.
The really cool thing about Catherine Friend is that I learned shortly after starting the book that she is local to me! Like, a town away local! Her farm raises sheep and llamas, and lamb for meat. Of course, I had to meet her.
Nathan, Mason, and I took a trip to Rising Moon Farm just last week, and, as Friend suggests consumers do, we toured the farm where we bought our beef! Catherine and her partner have a beautiful homestead on rolling hills. It was clean and organized, smelled wonderfully organic, and felt Friendly! Fun fact- the llamas are pets or used for their hair, they are kept as guard dogs! Apparently, the llama uses its long neck as a wicked battering ram against coyotes. We met the 3 statuesque sentries…

Cluck cluck! Catherine and Melissa trade eggs with a local optometrist for eye care. Love the localism!
After our tour, we purchased and loaded 25 pounds of ground beef, steak, and roasts into our trunk. I just might have to try red meat again, it really looks wonderful. (Note: I have nothing against it, other than I do not prefer the taste.) As I’m writing, Nathan is grilling up his first Rising Moon Farm steak and it smells great.
Catherine also presented me with a signed copy of her book to give away to a reader!
In typical blog giveaway style, enter to win this signed copy of Catherine Friend’s “Compassionate Carnivore” by leaving me a comment below…please tell me, what will YOU pledge as a goal to become a more compassionate and environmentally mindful foodie? For an extra entry, blog about this giveaway, or post it to your Facebook feed. (Be sure to tell me/link below.) Giveaway runs through Wednesday, April 21st, midnight!

I pledge to…
–avoid non-sustainable seafood (I am always guilty of eating the bad seafood)
–think before I buy dairy/eggs – where did it come from?
–more grass-fed/organic meat, but less meat in general
(I facebooked it too)
That sounds like such a great tour! That would be a ton of fun; you’re so lucky you got to meet her.
This book would be perfect for my boyfriend- he’s a bit (ha!) of a carnivore but he’s really interested in learning how to eat healthier. I’d love to be able to give it to him!
I pledge to shop at local stores and markets more frequently than big commercial businesses, and I pledge to increase my AWARENESS of where my food comes from by making a point of looking into it and talking to business owners, and I also pledge to go on the 100-mile diet this summer.
To begin with, anyway
Thanks Sagan! Hope its OK…I added your “living healthy” to my blogroll!
Thanks for telling me about this, Clare.
I feel I am already pretty compassionate, I have a CSA, I am vegan, I try to buy fresh/seasonal/local but always vow to do more! We can always do better!
Hey Clare! I really want to read both the Omnivore’s Dilemma and the Compassionate Carnivore. Do you own these books? Can I borrow them?
Currently, I have not eaten any meat for the past 2 1/2 months and I feel really good. So, I would really like to continue as a vegetarian, at least for the time being. I pledge to learn more about the vegetarian lifestyle and healthy ways to include protein into my diet without eating meat. I also pledge to buy more of my produce, dairy, and eggs locally.
Thanks for this post Clare! If you have the books and you’re okay with me borrowing them, then count me out of the giveaway, so someone else has a better chance of winning!
Great giveaway Clare. I would love to read this book as CD and just stocked our freezer with 30 pounds of local grass fed finished beef. We love it!
I pledge to try and find some local goat milk yogurt. Love the stuff, and surely there is a farm around me that sells it.
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!
That’s so neat that Catherine ended up being a neighbor (virtually). I’d love to read her book. This summer I would like to depend more on the local farmer’s markets for produce, especially more rare varieties that are more expensive and less fresh in stores.
I twittered — does that count?
I love that you went out and toured the farm!! I believe that getting out and seeing the inner workings of farm is a great way to know how food makes it from the farm to your table.
I pledge to continue to find great local food and support the people who sell it. Also to continure to raise our own beef, produce, and add chickens to our farm this year. We use the items that we produce to trade out for products that we do not raise or services that we need.
Awesome. I know Catherine & Melissa from several years back and applaud them for their sustainability efforts. We are raising 500 more chickens this year and a handful of pigs. No corn is fed to them, and wow, what a difference. We also raise organic crops, but again, no corn. I, too, read the Omnivore’s Dilemma. Wow, an eye opener, but am looking forward to reading Catherine’s book.

Clare, great idea! I will try to read the book, even if I don’t win it. In the mean time, I will pledge to
- buy fresh strawberries now, as opposed to the frozen ones I typically buy. They are in season now, here in LA.
- ask before I buy seafood – where did this come from? I like to think its a local catch, but I don’t always ask.
I will also share this on Facebook.
I love these posts, Clare! Please keep them coming. I pledge to using ALL of the fruit and veggies from my CSA box and only buying meat from my farmers market!
